THOUGHT MOVEMENTS with the Alexander Technique
Welcome!
Welcome to my homepage and thank you for your interest.
The Alexander Technique grew out of the work of its founder, F. Matthias Alexander, an Australian actor who lived from 1869-1955. He did all his pioneering work in Australia, then moved to London, England in 1904, never to return to his homeland.
Alexander began to train people to teach his Technique in 1931. My first teacher, Ms Erika Whittaker, was one member of that small, original cohort of trainees and hence, in the original group of teachers he certified in 1934.
I completed my initial teacher training and attained my certification as an Alexander Technique teacher in Melbourne, in 1992, having commenced my initial lessons with Erika in 1985. I still consider myself an enthusiastic student of the Alexander work, as well as a passionate and experienced teacher.
There are many informative and useful books on the Alexander Technique, including four written by F.M Alexander, and others published after his passing. Please consider finding and reading some of these key recommended titles:
F.M. Alexander: The Use of the Self
F. P. Jones: Body Awareness in Action
A. Farkas: Alexander Technique. Arising from Quiet
P. de Alcantara: Alexander Technique: A Skill for Life
M. Gelb: Body Learning
G. Park: The Art of Changing with the Alexander Technique
M. Barlow: An Examined Life
M. Vineyard: How You Stand, How you Think, How you Move
In addition to these key texts, there is much useful, and consistently good information available on the web these days. For example:
The Complete Guide to the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique
As interesting as these texts and readings are, they will assume much fuller meaning (and practical value) when you combine some formal study with a series of actual, hands-on lessons. These enable you to experience the work directly, to make sense of the principles and concepts, and learn how best to apply them in your daily life.
